Enterprise decision makers have been hearing for years that mobile technology can increase productivity, decrease costs and streamline business processes.
All of which is true, at least when the mobile deployment is managed effectively. When fundamental management mistakes are made, they can negate many of the advantages that mobile can bring to an enterprise. And many enterprise mobile mistakes can be traced back to policies.
Here are some of the most common enterprise mobile policy pitfalls:
No mobile policy
This should speak for itself. Employees are going to use mobile devices whether IT likes it or not. Ignoring this reality won’t make it go away.
Failure to enforce policies
Having no official enterprise mobile policy is bad. What’s arguably worse is creating a policy, but then failing to enforce or monitor it. This not only creates a false sense of security, it sends an “anything goes” message to your employees. And what could be going is valuable enterprise data. Remember, creating a mobile policy is only the first step.
Policies are unclear or incomplete
Incomplete or confusing mobile policies are another common blunder. If your policy doesn’t specify which types of mobile devices can access enterprise data, what apps employees can use on their mobile devices, and what level of support IT will provide, there will be potentially costly confusion. Your policy also should spell out how to handle lost or stolen devices and should make clear to employees their responsibility for securing their devices and the data on them.
Policies are heavy-handed
The opposite of no mobile policy is one that is so restrictive and oppressive that it undermines the efforts of employees, which will lead some to rogue mobile solutions and some to another employer.
