Ever since the iPhone starting showing up in corner offices and cubicles nearly eight years ago, enterprise employees have used apps designed to help them do their jobs.
But what started as a trickle and soon turned into a steady stream became a flood in 2014. According to data from appFigures, business apps led all other apps categories in growth last year in Apple’s App Store.
More than 128,000 new business apps were released in the App Store last year, more than the total number released in the “food & drink,” “social networking,” “lifestyle” and “catalogs” categories.
The business apps category also saw tremendous growth on Google Play, with the total number of business apps in the Android store more than doubling last year. While trailing “games,” “photography” and “music,” the point is that there are more than twice as many Android business apps in Google Play than there were a year ago.
For enterprises this means the possibility of getting more productivity out of employees with mobile devices. Even better, as appFigures CEO Ariel Michaeli explains to CIO.com’s Al Sacco, the emerging generation of business apps are more enterprise-ready:
“The industry has matured to the point where the apps aren’t just adding tremendous value but are also enabling the controls enterprises need to manage and maintain those apps,” he says. “We believe CIOs and IT teams are now in the unique position where they can greatly empower their companies by leveraging existing apps or getting apps developed for their needs.”
Sounds like the groundwork is being laid for the enterprise apps stores that we’ve been waiting to see flourish in large organizations, but haven’t quite taken off yet. With that many business apps available, it only makes sense for enterprises to provide some sort of guidance to employees. If Michaeli is correct, this could be the year of the enterprise apps store.
