Eleven years ago, when CSC’s Facilities and Real Estate group received a call requesting office furniture, a project manager would have to schedule a time to drive over to one of our warehouses and spend a few, often fruitless hours, searching through the stock.

Finding a better way

Mike Weaver, who runs the Americas Real Estate and Facilities said, “Back then, we had seven warehouses across the US just to store excess office furniture and locating items was a real logistical headache.”

Wear and tear was also a big issue, with up to 20 percent of stored stock needing attention before it could be reissued. As Mike explained, “We knew there had to be a better way of reducing our costs, reusing valuable resources and still providing our colleagues with safe, attractive and comfortable work stations.”

That better way arrived in 2005, when Mike met a representative from Davies Office, the largest independent remanufacturer of office solutions in the US, at an industry conference.

Reducing costs, preserving assets 

Fast-forward ten years and now when the phone rings, project managers no longer rely on out of date assets. Mike explained, “Davies now collects all of our excess furniture and stores it on our behalf. That in itself has allowed us to close seven large warehouses.”

Excess furniture that cannot be re-used is no longer sent to a warehouse or dumped in a landfill. It is returned to Davies where it is completely remanufactured to meet CSC’s current workstation standards and refreshed with all new fabric, paint and laminate before being sent back out to CSC facilities across the country.

The benefits have been considerable, saving in the region of $4 million a year in warehousing costs alone and conserving more than a million pounds of raw materials, but it also helps CSC stay true to its sustainability commitments. “The cost benefits are significant, but so too are the savings in energy, waste and carbon.’ said Mike. “Few people in CSC know that the desk they’re working off may have been remanufactured two or maybe three times, but I’m sure they’d all approve of our commitment to do the right thing – for them, the business and the environment.”
