A recent survey of 200 IT decision makers in the U.S. and Europe underscores how rapidly mobile technology has become a strategic priority in large enterprises over the past two years alone.
Conducted last fall by Vanson Bourne on behalf of Red Hat Mobile, the survey shows:
- More than half (52%) of respondents “report that their organization has fully implemented a mobile app strategy.” In a similar survey from 2013, only 7% reported having a mature mobile app strategy.
- While 51% of respondents to the 2013 survey said they had absolutely no mobile apps strategy, that number has nosedived today to 11%. So nearly all large enterprises are fully engaged in mobile apps or headed in that direction.
“Implementation levels of mobile app strategies show that companies have moved fast to embrace mobile and incorporate it into their business,” the survey report says.
And the smart enterprises ensure that their mobile apps strategies are as dynamic as mobile technology itself and able to change as needed. The new survey shows that “89% of respondents have either fully or partially implemented a mobile app strategy and more than half of these (60%) regularly review it.”
It’s fair to say that any large enterprise with a fully developed and reviewable mobile apps strategy is doing something right. Yet as the survey report points out, there are levels:
Mobile is instrumental in enabling organizations to transform how they do business. Through device capabilities in combination with back-end business data, business processes can be reinvented for mobile. However, only 35% of organizations surveyed see the primary use of mobility as changing how they do business. Less-mature organizations use mobile primarily as a means to automate existing business processes (37%), while nearly a quarter (24%) are mobilizing existing web-based processes.
If your enterprise is using mobile for any of the three reasons above, it’s deriving benefits. But the enterprises with less-mature mobile initiatives are aiming lower, and thus leaving a lot of value on the table.
Bottom line: If you have a transformational technology, you may as well use it to transform your business. Because there’s a good chance that’s exactly what your competitors are doing.
